Does a Bird Flu Vaccination exist?
No, there is currently no vaccination that will protect people against the H5N1 Bird Flu virus.
Currently many countries are trying to develop a Bird Flu vaccination and many health organisations are working to make sure access is gained as quickly as possible once one is developed and available.
From the onset of a flu pandemic it may take up to 6 months for a Bird Flu vaccination to be developed and made available in sufficient quantities.
With no vaccination, what should you do in a Bird flu Pandemic?
Until such time as a Bird Flu Vaccination has been developed and is made available, the only sensible approach to your well being and that of your family, is one of care and prevention.
There are medications such as Tamiflu and Relenza that may help to prevent becomming infected by the H5N1 Bird Flu virus but they are not a Bird Flu vaccination. What Tamiflu and Relenza do is to inhibit the growth of the Influenza A type virus in the human body. Taking these drugs will inhibit and prevent the growth of the Bird Flu virus before the secondary and more serious complications eventuate. It is these secondary complications such as Pneumonia and breathing difficulties that can cause eventual death.
Tamiflu or Oseltamivir is used to treat some types of influenza (flu) in patients who have had symptoms of the flu for two days or less. Tamiflu is in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. These drugs work by stopping the growth and spread of the Bird Flu virus in your body. Tamiflu helps shorten the time you have flu symptoms like nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, fever and chills.
